Why clean?

Why is cleaning a solar system important?

Photovoltaic modules work purely with the sunlight that reaches their surface. Any soiling on the solar glass reduces the amount of light reaching the solar cells. The cleaner the module surface, the better the modules can perform under the given weather conditions.

This isn't just about visible soiling such as bird droppings or moss. Fine dust, flower pollen, industrial particles or limescale residue can also build up over time and reduce the light transmission of the glass surface.

Localised soiling — such as from bird droppings — is particularly problematic, as it can shade individual areas of a module more heavily than others.

Your system is a long-term investment

A modern photovoltaic system is often installed with a planned service life of several decades. Professional cleaning supports long-term value retention while also enabling a better visual check for possible damage.

Benefits of professional solar panel cleaning

  • Optimal energy yield

Clean module surfaces enable the best possible light absorption under the given weather and operating conditions.

  • Preserving your investment

Regular care supports the long-term preservation of your photovoltaic system over its planned service life.

  • Better visual inspection

During cleaning, obvious damage or irregularities can be more easily spotted and reported.

  • Material-friendly cleaning

Professional methods avoid unnecessary stress on glass, frames, seals and anti-reflective coatings.

  • Sustainability

A well-maintained photovoltaic system supports the long-term operation of your own renewable energy generation.

Why cleaning it yourself is risky
  • • Significant fall risk when working on the roof
  • • The wrong cleaning agents leave residue on coatings
  • • Pressure washers stress seals and cable connections
  • • Hard tap water causes limescale marks
  • • Hard brushes permanently scratch anti-reflective coatings

Have your photovoltaic system professionally assessed

Whether cleaning makes sense depends on location, soiling, roof pitch and surroundings. We assess your system individually — free, no obligation, transparent.

Understanding photovoltaics

Structure of a solar module & module types

To clean a solar system correctly, you need to understand what it's made of. Every layer of a module has an important function and must be protected during cleaning.

How is a solar module built?

A modern photovoltaic module consists of several precisely matched layers — from outside to inside:

  1. 1
Tempered solar glass— Protects all layers, must allow maximum light transmission
  2. 2
Anti-reflective coating— Reduces light reflections — especially sensitive!
  3. 3
Encapsulation material (EVA)— Protects and bonds the solar cells
  4. 4
Solar cells— Generate electricity via the photovoltaic effect
  5. 5
Backsheet / 2nd glass layer— Protection from the inside (glass-glass modules)
  6. 6
Aluminium frame— Stability and secure mounting
  7. 7
Junction box & cables— Electrical connections — don't stress them!
Anti-reflective coating — especially sensitive

Many modern modules have an anti-reflective coating that reduces light reflections. It's more sensitive than ordinary glass. Never use: scouring pads, steel wool, aggressive cleaning agents or abrasives. A damaged anti-reflective layer can't be repaired.

Electrical safety

Photovoltaic modules generate electrical voltage as soon as there's daylight — even if the inverter is switched off. Electrical checks, repairs or changes may only be carried out by qualified electricians. Cleaning doesn't involve any work on electrical components.

What types of photovoltaic modules are there?

⬛
Most common

Monocrystalline modules

Today the most commonly installed modules in the residential sector. High efficiency, uniform black appearance, sensitive to partial shading.

Economical

Polycrystalline modules

Recognisable by their bluish surface. Slightly lower efficiency but robust and economical technology. Uneven soiling can also affect power generation here.

Double-sided

Bifacial modules

Generate electricity on both front and back. Often used on ground-mounted systems, carports and industrial buildings. Cleaning is more complex as both sides need consideration.

Commercial

Thin-film modules

Less common in the residential sector. Often on large commercial roofs and industrial halls. These modules also benefit from material-appropriate cleaning.

What types of soiling occur most frequently?

Bird droppings

One of the most problematic types of soiling. Can fully shade individual solar cells, dries stubbornly and is barely removed by rain.

Flower pollen

Large amounts of pollen can settle in spring. Combined with moisture this creates a sticky film that rain can barely remove.

Industrial & fine dust

In conurbations like Dortmund and the Ruhr area, fine dust, soot and industrial particles settle on modules — often barely visible but reducing output.

Limescale & mineral deposits

Limescale marks form after hard water dries. Rain with hard water makes the problem worse. That's why purified water is so important during cleaning.

Algae & lichen

Especially on flat-pitched modules or in humid regions. Lichen grows slowly but adheres particularly firmly and requires suitable removal methods.

Saharan dust

Saharan dust regularly reaches as far as NRW. Combined with rain, stubborn deposits form that further rainfall can barely remove.

What are hotspots? A hotspot is an area of a solar module that can heat up more than the surrounding areas — caused by strong partial shading or firmly adhering soiling. Persistently adhering soiling such as bird droppings is a good reason to have the system checked and cleaned if needed.

Influence of roof pitch on soiling

Steep roofs (approx. 35–45°)

Rain can more easily wash away dust. Nevertheless, the following often remain:

  • •Bird droppings
  • •Tree resin
  • •Pollen film
  • •Limescale residue
Flat-pitched roofs

Water stays on the modules longer. As a result, the following occur more often:

  • •Water marks & limescale residue
  • •Heavier dirt deposits
  • •Biofilm & algae formation
  • •Heavy soiling at module edges
Cleaning methods

Why the right cleaning method matters

Photovoltaic modules are highly developed technical products. A "just get it clean" approach can scratch the glass surface, damage anti-reflective coatings, stress seals and impair appearance and maintainability in the long run.

Purified water — the professional standard

Gentle, residue-free, no limescale

Recommended

The most commonly used method today is cleaning with purified water — water from which nearly all dissolved minerals and salts have been removed. As a result, the water dries almost residue-free on the glass surface.

Why is ordinary tap water a problem?

Tap water contains limescale, magnesium, sodium and other minerals, depending on the region. When it evaporates, these remain as residue on the glass — streaks, limescale marks, and new dirt particles stick more quickly. Purified water avoids this problem.

  • Almost limescale-free
  • No residue after drying
  • No streaks
  • Often no additional cleaning agents needed
  • Especially gentle on anti-reflective coatings
Pure water system

Water is passed under pressure through a special membrane that retains most dissolved substances. The result is water with a very low mineral content — ideal for sensitive glass surfaces.

Demineralised water

Dissolved minerals are removed using special resins. Also excellently suited for solar modules, glass facades, conservatories and glass roofs.

Avoiding thermal shock

In summer, solar modules can get very hot. Sudden contact with much colder water can unnecessarily stress the material. Professional cleaning takes place in the morning, evening or under overcast skies.

Special cleaning brushes

Soft bristles, high water absorption, wide working width, no metal parts in the contact area. Special brushes remove dirt gently and distribute the purified water evenly over the module surface.

  • Soft bristles
  • No scratches
  • Even cleaning
  • Suitable for all module types

Carbon telescopic poles

Many roof systems can be cleaned from the ground or from safe working positions — without walking on the modules. Carbon poles are light, have long reach and allow precise, ergonomic work.

  • Low weight
  • Long reach
  • No need to walk on the modules
  • Safe working

Robotic cleaning

For very large photovoltaic systems, cleaning robots are sometimes used — often for solar parks, industrial sites or large hall roofs. Even cleaning of large areas with reduced physical strain.

Usually not economically necessary for private single-family homes.

Why pressure washers aren't suitable

Many owners consider cleaning solar modules with a pressure washer. In most cases this isn't advisable.

  • Puts unnecessary strain on seals
  • Affects plug connections
  • Stresses frames and edges
  • Hits sensitive module areas
  • No controlled pressure possible

Why household cleaners aren't a good idea

Many glass or household cleaners contain surfactants, fragrances, alcohol, silicones or waxes. These can:

  • Leave residue on the module surface
  • Attract new dirt faster
  • Cause streaks and marks
  • Make additional cleaning necessary
  • Affect anti-reflective coatings

How does professional solar panel cleaning work?

Professional solar panel cleaning involves far more than just cleaning the module surface. Every step is carefully planned — for material-friendly treatment and the safety of everyone involved.

01

Inspection & analysis

Module type, number, roof pitch, roof material, accessibility, degree of soiling, visible damage and surrounding conditions are checked. This analysis forms the basis for choosing the method.

02

Safety preparation

Securing the work area, choosing suitable access routes, setting up scaffolding or a lifting platform if required, fall protection, checking weather conditions.

03

Weather check

Ideal: overcast skies, cool morning hours or afternoon. Avoided: strong sunshine, storms, thunderstorms, frost and ice formation on the modules.

04

Carrying out the cleaning

Use of purified water, soft special brushes and carbon telescopic poles. Stubborn deposits are removed with extra care — without putting unnecessary strain on the glass surface.

05

Visual check during cleaning

Cracked glass, loose frames, heavy soiling, unusual discolouration and other irregularities can be spotted and reported to the owner. This doesn't replace an electrical inspection.

06

Final check

Even cleaning results, remaining soiling, visible irregularities and the proper condition of the work area are checked at the end.

  • As little chemistry as possible — only when needed
  • Suitable products — material-compatible & environmentally sound
  • Efficient water use
  • Careful handling of cleaning water per German water law (WHG)
  • Guided by recommendations from the German Environment Agency

Cleaning is not the same as maintenance

Cleaning means: removing dirt, cleaning the module surface, visual inspection.
Maintenance additionally means: electrical measurements, checking the inverter, checking the wiring, insulation measurements, technical function checks.
These tasks belong exclusively to qualified electrical companies.

Cost-effectiveness

Is professional solar panel cleaning worthwhile?

The honest answer is: it depends on the individual conditions of your system. A system on a steep roof in a clean residential area gets dirty differently than one near industry, under trees, or on a flat-pitched roof.

Which types of soiling have the biggest impact?

Bird droppingsStrong — locally shades individual cells
Moss & lichenMedium to strong — area-wide blocking
Flower pollenMedium — sticky film, combines with moisture
Industrial & fine dustLow to medium — even fine film
Limescale & mineral residueLow to medium — depending on concentration
Even dustLow — often largely removed by rain

Which locations get dirty faster?

Agriculture
• Stable dust
• Pollen in large amounts
• organic particles
Industry
• Fine dust & soot
• Metal particles
• Emissions
Near forests
• Leaves & needles
• Resin
• Bird droppings
Cities
• Traffic dust
• Tyre abrasion
• Air pollution

Worked example

Comparing two identical systems: System A with regular visual checks and cleaning as needed vs. System B without cleaning for many years, exposed to pollen, bird droppings and industrial dust. With System B, soiling remains permanently on the modules, makes visual inspection harder, and significantly increases the effort of a later cleaning.

How do you know cleaning might make sense?

Visible soiling on the modules
Noticeable bird droppings deposits
Yellowish pollen film after flowering season
White limescale marks despite rain
Leaf accumulation at module edges
Persistent soiling despite several rainfalls
System in an industrial area or near forests
System on a flat-pitched roof
Last cleaning was several years ago

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about solar panel cleaning

Answers to the most important questions — from costs and methods to safety and cost-effectiveness.

Solar panel cleaning removes dirt, dust, pollen, bird droppings, leaves and other deposits from the surface of the solar modules. The aim is a clean module surface and material-friendly care of the photovoltaic system.

Over time, various types of soiling build up on the modules. Professional cleaning removes this gently and supports the long-term value retention of the system.

Whether cleaning is worthwhile depends on factors such as location, roof pitch, degree of soiling and surroundings. An individual assessment makes sense. With heavy soiling such as bird droppings, pollen or industrial dust, cleaning is usually recommended.

There's no general interval. We recommend regular visual checks and cleaning when soiling becomes clearly visible or stubborn. In demanding environments such as industrial areas or near forests, more frequently.

Rain can remove loose dust, but it often fails to remove stubborn deposits such as bird droppings, resin, pollen film or limescale. Flatter-pitched roofs in particular are cleaned far less effectively by rain.

Yes. Depending on the type and extent of soiling, less sunlight can reach the solar cells. How strongly this affects yield varies from system to system. Bird droppings and large-area coatings have the strongest effect.

In principle this is possible, but there are significant risks from working at height as well as from unsuitable cleaning methods. The wrong tools can damage anti-reflective coatings. That's why many owners choose a specialist company.

In most cases this is not advisable, as high water pressure can unnecessarily stress seals, frames, cable connections and other sensitive areas. Professional cleaning uses low pressure and suitable brush systems.

A pure water system produces water with most of its dissolved minerals removed. As a result it dries almost residue-free and leaves no limescale marks on the modules.

Purified water is particularly low-mineral water often used for cleaning sensitive glass surfaces such as solar modules. It prevents limescale residue and streaks after drying.

For cleaning sensitive glass surfaces, low-mineral water has the advantage that hardly any limescale or mineral residue forms after drying. Tap water leaves limescale marks, depending on the region, which can impair light transmission.

In many cases purified water alone is sufficient. Special cleaning agents are only used when the soiling requires it – for example with greasy deposits, resin or heavy organic residue.

Unsuitable household cleaners or aggressive chemicals can leave residue or affect anti-reflective coatings. That's why only suitable, material-compatible products should be used.

Yes, if unsuitable tools are used. Hard brushes, abrasives or steel wool can damage the glass surface. Professionals use only soft special brushes with no metal parts in the contact area.

Soft special brushes remove dirt gently and minimise the risk of scratches. High-quality brushes have soft bristles, high water absorption and no metal parts in contact with the module.

Cool temperatures are ideal, for example in the morning, evening or under overcast skies. In strong sunshine modules can get very hot – sudden contact with much colder water should be avoided.

Extreme temperature differences between module and water should be avoided wherever possible. That's why work is often carried out outside the strongest midday sun – in the morning, evening or under cloud cover.

No. Snow may slide off and take some dirt with it, but it doesn't replace professional cleaning. Stubborn deposits such as bird droppings or limescale remain even after snow.

Stubborn bird droppings shouldn't remain on the modules permanently, as they are rarely fully removed by rain. They can heavily shade individual solar cells and, under intense sunlight, lead to increased local heating.

During pollen season, noticeable deposits can build up, especially in areas with many trees. Combined with moisture, this often creates a sticky film that rain can barely remove.

Yes. Fine dust, soot, tyre abrasion and industrial particles can continuously settle on the modules, forming a fine film. In Dortmund and the Ruhr area this is a common problem.

Often yes, as dust and organic particles from agriculture – stable dust, harvest work, high concentrations of pollen – can cause additional soiling.

Depending on the size of the system it often takes a few hours up to a full working day. A typical home system with 20–40 modules is usually finished within 2–4 hours. Large commercial systems take correspondingly longer.

Not necessarily. What matters is that access to the system and roof is arranged. We agree everything with you in advance.

That depends on roof height, pitch and accessibility. Depending on the situation, mobile elevating platforms, carbon telescopic poles operated from the ground, or rope-securing systems may also be used.

No. Work is postponed during storms, thunderstorms, ice or other unsafe conditions. Strong sunshine on very hot modules should also be avoided.

Yes. Although they are built to be robust and pass tests such as hail resistance, they should always be treated with material-friendly care. Anti-reflective coatings in particular are sensitive to incorrect cleaning methods.

During cleaning, obvious damage or irregularities can be spotted – cracked glass, loose frames, unusual discolouration. However, it doesn't replace a technical or electrical inspection by a specialist company.

No. Cleaning doesn't include electrical maintenance or a function check of the inverter. Electrical checks fall within the remit of qualified electricians.

No. It serves purely to clean the module surfaces and provide a visual check. Technical defects must be resolved by qualified specialist companies.

Many manufacturers issue care guidelines for their modules. Professional cleaning in line with manufacturer recommendations shouldn't affect the warranty. When in doubt, it's worth checking the manufacturer's warranty terms.

That depends on the cleaning method and the soiling. With purified-water cleaning without chemicals, no special residue is usually produced. If needed, suitable measures for environmentally sound handling of cleaning water are taken.

Generally, the frames and accessible areas of the modules are also cleaned, as dirt and deposits can accumulate there too.

Yes, provided safe access is possible. Balcony power plants and plug-in solar systems can be cleaned on request.

Yes. Depending on size, different working methods and equipment are used. For very large systems, specialised cleaning procedures may be used.

Yes. We serve both private homeowners and commercial customers with larger systems on hall roofs, industrial and commercial buildings.

With professional cleaning using suitable methods and soft brushes, the risk is minimised. Professional providers know the requirements of the various module types.

Cleaning doesn't replace technical maintenance. Whether servicing makes sense depends on the condition of the system and manufacturer recommendations. We recommend regular servicing by a qualified electrical company.

Typical signs are: visible bird droppings, yellowish pollen film, white limescale marks, resin or leaf deposits, visible dust layers, and clear differences between individual modules.

Yes. Larger roof areas can also be cleaned, provided accessibility and safety are ensured. We use suitable equipment for large areas.

Wherever possible, no. Depending on the system, carbon telescopic poles or other suitable systems are used to avoid walking on the modules and to protect them.

Most modules are tested against hail impact, but visible damage should still be checked after severe storms. In the event of hail damage, a specialist company and the building insurer should be contacted.

Leaves themselves usually don't cause damage, but they can encourage shading and dirt build-up. Leaves at the module edges also promote moisture accumulation and biofilm formation.

That depends on how the system is used and applicable tax rules. For commercial use it's generally deductible as a business expense. In individual cases, a tax advisor should be consulted.

Depending on the project, pricing is calculated by number of modules, total area in m², effort, accessibility and roof height. We offer transparent guide prices after a free inspection.

After an inspection or based on project data, a transparent guide price can often be offered. We always calculate individually — with no hidden costs.
